How KDP royalties work

Paperbacks: KDP pays 60% of your list price, minus the printing cost. The printing cost depends on page count, ink type and marketplace. More pages means a higher printing cost and a lower royalty.

eBooks: KDP offers two royalty options. The 70% option applies to list prices between $2.99 and $9.99, and a delivery fee based on file size is deducted. The 35% option applies to other prices and has no delivery fee. Large files with many images cost more to deliver, so keep file size lean.

Example (paperback): A 120-page paperback priced at $12.99 has an estimated printing cost of $2.44. The 60% share is $7.79, so the royalty is about $5.35 per sale.

Example (eBook): A 2 MB eBook priced at $4.99 loses about $0.30 to delivery. The royalty is about $3.28 per sale.

Tips to increase your royalty

  • Price paperbacks high enough to cover printing costs and still leave a healthy margin.
  • Compress images in eBooks to reduce the delivery fee.
  • For low-content books, a smaller page count lowers printing cost, but check that the price still looks fair to buyers.
  • Test two or three price points and compare real sales data, not only the calculator.

FAQ

How much does Amazon KDP pay per book?

It depends on your price and format. Paperbacks earn 60% of the list price minus printing cost. eBooks earn 70% or 35% of the price, depending on the royalty option and price range.

What is the printing cost on KDP?

It is a fixed amount plus a per-page amount, and it changes with ink type (black or color), trim size and marketplace. Check KDP’s print cost table for the exact current figures.

Why is my KDP royalty lower than I expected?

The most common reasons are a high page count, color printing, a low list price, or a large eBook file that triggers a bigger delivery fee.

Is the 70% eBook royalty always better?

Usually, if your price fits the $2.99 to $9.99 range. But for very large files the delivery fee can be significant, so run the numbers for both options.

Does this calculator include taxes?

No. It estimates royalties before income tax. Rules and rates can also change, so treat results as estimates.
